July 15 is National Pet Fire Safety Day. Here are a few short steps to keep you and your pet safe from American Humane.
The first step to fire safety is fire prevention:
- Reduce open flame exposure and never leave an open flame unattended
- Remember to never leave an exposed cord or wire within reach of your pet
- Always turn off cooking or heating appliances after use
The next step is to prepare for a fire:
- Be prepared and always have an emergency plan (be sure to include your pet in this plan)
- Have a to-go bag ready with pet supplies
- Include a pet number decal on a window that is clearly visible
- Make sure your smoke detectors are properly functioning
- Know where your pet likes to hide when they are frightened or stressed
Lastly, in the event of a fire, here’s what you can do:
- If you cannot find your pet, let emergency responders know immediately so they can secure the area
- Remember to grab leashes and carries
- If your pet is still inside, make sure all doors are open and call to your pet
